The symptom gets us started. The part still has to be tested. A clicking gas burner is not automatically a bad igniter, and a cold electric burner is not automatically a bad element.
Smell gas?Turn the burner and range off. If the odor is strong, continues after the appliance is off, or you suspect a gas leak, leave the area and contact the gas utility or emergency services from a safe location. Do not keep trying to light the burner.
Burner keeps clicking after it lights
We check the burner cap and ports, ignition area, moisture or spill residue, flame position, switches, wiring and spark system before calling an ignition part bad.
Gas flame is weak, uneven or yellow

Gas Burner Clicking Is a Symptom, Not the Diagnosis
If the spark is snapping but the burner does not light, the spark system is at least trying to work. Before replacing an igniter, we look at the simple stuff that actually affects ignition: burner cap position, dirty ports, moisture from cleaning or a spill, and where the spark is landing.
If the burner is clean, dry and assembled correctly but still does not light, then we move deeper into the electrode, switch, wiring and ignition system.
That order keeps a five-minute setup issue from turning into an unnecessary parts job.

Electric Burner Cycling On and Off Can Be Normal
On many electric ranges, the surface control cycles power to maintain the selected heat. Seeing the burner glow, switch off, then glow again does not automatically mean something is failing.
The red flag is when the burner no longer responds correctly to the setting, stays much hotter than it should, never gets hot enough, or behaves very differently from the other burners.
One Dead Burner Usually Gives Us a Better Starting Point
If three burners work and one is completely cold, the whole range probably does not have a general power failure. That lets us concentrate on the element, its connection, the burner control, wiring and model-specific electronics.

Why does my gas stove click but not light?

Why does my gas stove keep clicking after the burner lights?
Constant clicking can happen when moisture or residue affects the ignition area, the flame is not reaching the sensing point correctly, or there is a switch, wiring or spark-system problem. Turn the burner off if it is not operating normally.
Why is my gas burner flame yellow or uneven?
Dirty burner ports, an incorrectly seated burner cap, burner setup or gas-related conditions can change the flame. If cleaning and reseating the cap do not correct a repeated abnormal flame, the range should be checked.
Why is one electric stove burner not heating?
